Handel's (love) duets, of which there are usually only one or two in most of his operas, were often the ultimate climax and will be at the heart of this program: when two lovers say their final goodbyes, or when they finally celebrate their reunion, Handel knew how to richly fuse two voices together to reach an emotional climax.
Jeanine de Bique is one of the greatest young rising opera stars of the moment. Together with Maarten Engeltjes, she recently sang in the Matthew Passion with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. From the consonance of their voices and personal chemistry, the idea was born to create a program together around Handel and contemporaries - with Handel as the master of expressing human emotion. Duet "Io t'abbraccio," from the second act of opera Rodelinda and an absolute highlight within this program, will tear many a heart apart.
