Ombra mai fu

G.F. Händel

About

“Ombra mai fu” is one of the most famous arias in Baroque music, often called “Handel’s Largo” — but that name isn’t actually entirely accurate. In the score, the tempo is indicated as Larghetto, which is slightly faster than a true Largo.

The piece is the opening aria from Serse, the opera Handel wrote in 1738. In it, King Xerxes of Persia sings of the shadow of a plane tree in his garden — an unusual love song, addressed to a tree rather than a human. And there is another surprising twist: Handel was not the first to set this text to music. Both Francesco Cavalli and Giovanni Bononcini had previously created a version of it, based on the same libretto by Nicolò Minato. Handel built upon Bononcini’s setting.

Serse itself was not a success at the premiere — the opera disappeared from the stage after only five performances. It was not until the nineteenth century that “Ombra mai fu” was rediscovered, and since then it has grown into one of the most performed and adapted pieces of the Baroque era, from organ and piano versions to performances at weddings and funerals.

Text (excerpt):
Ombra mai fu di vegetabile,
cara ed amabile, soave più.

Never was there a shadow of a plant so precious, so lovely, so soft.
