Maarten Engeltjes | counter tenor

Maarten Engeltjes (1984) is one of the most sought-after counter tenors in the world. His repertoire includes baroque music as well as contemporary compositions. In addition to his solo career, in which he collaborates with famous conductors, he founded his own baroque ensemble in 2017, PRJCT Amsterdam.

At the age of four Maarten sang as a boy soprano in the Elburg “Stadsknapenkoor” (Town’s Boys Choir) and as a sixteen year old he made his debut as a soloist in St. Matthew’s Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. Engeltjes graduated cum laude from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 2007. During his training he was taught by Maria Acda, Manon Heijne, Michael Chance and Andreas Scholl. Engeltjes is married and has two sons.

Engeltjes’ repertoire includes operas, oratorios and other vocal works, with Bach and Handel occupying pride of place. Engeltjes often performs as a soloist with international top orchestras and opera companies in the Netherlands and around the world. He regularly collaborates with famous conductors such as Vladimir Jurowski, William Christie, Ton Koopman, Peter Dijkstra, Reinbert de Leeuw, Markus Stenz, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Diego Fasolis, Emanuelle Haim and Jordi Savall.

Engeltjes performs in the Netherlands and around the world. Important foreign performances in recent years were at Lincoln Center (New York), Philharmonie (Berlin), Izumi Hall (Tokyo), Palau de la Musica (Barcelona), Barbican Hall (London), Salle Bourgié (Montreal), Tonhalle (Zurich) and Konzerthaus (Vienna). A recent highlight was Engeltjes’ performance in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse conducted by Emanuelle Haïm as ‘La Fragilité humaine’ and as Pisandro, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and elsewhere. After that, Engeltjes played the title role in the Handel opera Solomon, with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Peter Dijkstra.

In 2007, Maarten Engeltjes released his first album with songs by Dowland, Byrd and Purcell.  Engeltjes also cooperated on a large number of CD recordings, including Buxtehude Opera Omnia (Ton Koopman).

In 2019, Sony will release the first two CDs of Maarten Engeltjes & PRJCT Amsterdam.
