If Music Be the Food of Love

Top-ranking countertenors Andreas Scholl and Maarten Engeltjes sing arias and duets by their colleagues from the seventeenth century, better knows as the highest-esteemed composers of the English Baroque: Henry Purcell and John Blow. Andreas, Maarten, Henry and John all started their musical careers as boy choristers in a church choir. Such wonderful music the English choral tradition has produced! Furthermore, just as the young Purcell was a student of Blow’s, so the young Engeltjes received singing lessons by Scholl.

Accompanied by PRJCT Amsterdam, Andreas Scholl and Maarten Engeltjes present the most beautiful arias and duets, both popular and more obscure, Purcell and Blow wrote for the type of voice the identified with most: the countertenor or áltus’, the hight male voice.
